We love using open source content management systems, the good ones are well documented, pretty secure, flexible and scalable. WordPress has definitely come out on top as our favourite, but we thought we’d give you the opportunity to look around a few of our favourites. Bear in mind that these are default installations, so very basic with no extras.

WordPress
WordPress is the world most popular blogging platform, and has grown to become a fully fledged content management system capable of powering a wide range of different website types. Over 18% of all new websites published are powered by WordPress.

Joomla
Joomla is again a very capable system powering some high-profile websites across the internet. Perhaps a little more mature than WordPress with a more polished admin interface. Joomla accounts for around 3% of all new websites published.

Drupal
Drupal powers a wide range of the worlds websites ranging from personal blogs to corporate, political, and government sites. Around 2% of newly published websites use Drupal to manage their content.

Prestashop
Arguably one of the most polished e-commerce solutions out of the box. Prestashop offers a powerful and flexible system to start selling online.

Zencart has been around a long time and although the admin screens are a little dated the core is flexible, easy to extend, and very flexible when it comes to designing a unique store.

An established system; osCommerce is a popular choice for setting up an online store.

It’s interesting to note that the basic install of WordPress is probably the least inspiring to look at here. The real beauty of WordPress is the relative ease that it can be customised and extended to create great websites. Here’s a few examples from our portfolio.
